Like all books, and especially first ones, Kingdoms of Evil was an experiment. It answered two questions. First, can I put one word in front of another until I have told a story? Yes. Second, can I get that story published? Uh…no.
I still think Kingdoms of Evil is a good story (and if you’ve read this far, presumably you do too), but even I have to admit that when I started, I had no idea what I was doing. I’ve learned a lot about the techniques and conventions of writing, and if I had the whole thing to do over again, it might stand a better chance of getting the attention of agents and publishers.
But I don’t want to spend my life writing the same story over and over again. I wrote this one, I learned from it, and now I’m moving on to write other stories (and hopefully do a better job of it). On the other hand, I like Kingdoms of Evil. I like Freetrick, and I didn’t want to just mummify him and his world in my hard drive. So I put them on the web, where they can flourish or perish on their own merits. It seems, at least in some ways, some flourishing happened, and that I owe to you, Dear Reader. Thank you.
Now, do you have any feedback? Whether your comments are negative or positive, I’d love to hear them. You can email me (bensen dot daniel at gmail dot com) or post critiques in the comments below, or post a review on Smashwords, Amazon, or Goodreads. In fact, make a comment and tell me your email address, and I’ll send you my second book (now being shopped to agents and publishers). I think it’s better than Kingdoms of Evil, and maybe you’ll agree.
To those of you who bought my book in the hopes of seeing more Kingdoms of Evil, I’m sorry I can’t give you what you want. I only got 9 sales, which isn’t enough to justify taking time away from my current projects to write a Kingdoms of Evil sequel. I will send a copy of the World’s Other Side, to the people who bought Kingdoms of Evil, though, and, in general, I owe you guys one 🙂
And I hope you’ll all keep coming back to the website. Now that Kingdoms of Evil is over, I’ll be posting some short stories, story ideas, and other bloggish stuff. Next on the menu is a Kingdoms of Evil short that takes place a generation in the future…
